  • ANTI-BULLYING WEEK from Mon 13 November

    Mon 13 Nov 2023 R Eckley

Whole School Anti-Bullying Week from Monday 13 th November 2023

As part of Anti-Bullying Week, in our PSHE lessons and in assemblies, we will be discussing all forms of bullying. We will be using materials from the Anti-Bullying Alliance.  Discussions we will be having in class:

    What is bullying?

Bullying is when a person repeatedly says or does things to control another person. People can bully others by, among other things, calling them names, making derogatory comments or writing mean things about them, excluding them from activities, refusing to engage with them, threatening them, inducing fear or dread in them, stealing or damaging their property, hitting or kicking them, or forcing them to do things they don't want to. This might take place in person or online. Bullying can refer to a variety of things; all of them are damaging. If you are being bullied, then you might think that it's your fault. It isn't. No-one has the right to bully you. If you speak out about it, there are people who care - they will listen to you and help you. Have any of these things happened to you? Have you done any of these things to someone else? Really, bullying is wrong behaviour which makes the person being bullied feel afraid or uncomfortable. We need to unite against bullying.

Your child is invited to wear BLUE clothes on Wednesday 15th November to mark Anti-Bullying Week. No money is required. If your child has PE, please wear something appropriate for exercising.

OPTIONAL ACTIVITY – your child is invited to create a leaf over half-term for our anti-bullying tree. This work is for display and needs to have an anti-bullying message written on it.

Please contact us if you require any further help or advice. Mrs. Eckley

  • Black History Month at Coteford

    Thu 12 Oct 2023 R Eckley

We were very proud of the contributions made by our pupils in our ‘Celebrating Black History’ assemblies. We asked pupils what made them proud. The children shared their heritage and others discussed why it is important to represent all people and to ensure everyone has a voice. We are delighted with all of our contributors but one story really stood out. Iyass’s family have given us permission to share his words. This is a snapshot of what he said:

'I’m proud to be black because my heritage is a source of strength. Black is beautiful, black is excellent, black is joy, black is pain and black is evident. I’m black and I’m proud. My ancestors went from being kings and queens to slaves and then back to kings and queens.'

Iyass’s great great grandfather was captured with his sister and they were both set to become slaves. But as his grandfather was albino, he was let go as his skin did not look black. His sister was taken and to this day no-one knows if she died or stayed alive.

His story was so powerful that the children started a round of rapturous applause.  He finished with such powerful words:

'I come from a powerful family. I was born too soon but will never give up because I am Iyass Baba. I’m black and proud.'

Huge thanks to Iyass and all of our children who contributed. It was a special moment for all of us.

  • SUMMER READING CHALLENGE!

    Mon 17 Jul 2023 D.Selfe

    The Summer Reading Challenge

    Dear parents and carers,

You will have received a letter regarding The Summer Reading Challenge recently. The challenge encourages pupils to visit your local library four times over the summer and get prizes as rewards! It’s free. It’s local. Reading often and widely is the best thing you can do to improve your child’s performance at school.

MyOn - our online library is also available to you over the break. These are the login details. Please make use of it frequently over the summer. Reading a real book and visiting the library is most certainly the best option but this online library is there for a rainy day…

Go to https://www.myon.co.uk and enter your login information:

    1. School Name: Summer Reads
    2. Username: SUM
    3. Password: SUMR123!

Click the Sign In button, select a book, and start reading!

Have a great day and happy reading!
